The main reason is that many newborn photographers book up 3 month in advance. I personally only take 2 newborn sessions a month because they take more planning and the session itself is longer. Editing newborn sessions also take me twice as long as a family session.
TWO
You are probably not going to have the energy to have a session planned after baby is born:
You are going to be in a bit of a postpartum haze after baby is born and not up for planning anything. I get everything ready to go for your session before your baby is born so that the most you have to do is do your hair and makeup the day of the session (I’ll have your dress or outfit already planned for you). I can also arrange to have a hair & makeup artist come to your home the morning of your session so you don’t even have to do that!
THREE
Making sure you get on your favorite photographer’s schedule:
It takes a good month for your photographer to plan out your session. Well I can’t speak for other photographers on this one. But I almost always order clothing and special prop items for your session from oversea Etsy sellers that rake a month to arrive. I get your feedback on clothing items beforehand to get your approval and all that takes time.
FOUR
Baby’s degree of newborn squishiness:
It’s nice to be able to have your session within your baby’s first two weeks. This is not a must tho. Anytime within the first month is still considered newborn. But the first two weeks is when they are still squishy and can be put in those adorable newborn portrait poses. During the first two weeks newborns are typically very sleepy and a bit easier to photograph. After two weeks they really start waking up and gassy belly’s start to bother them. They also start to get their baby acne. None of these things will prevent you from getting great photos. A photographer can remove baby acne in photoshop, but it makes the whole process faster and smoother if you’re able to have your session done in those first 2 weeks.
Here’s a recent at home lifestyle session in Bexley Ohio. Did you know you can choose if you want a very casual lifestyle session in your home, to a very styled session in a studio? I do them both and a range of both styles in the middle. It just depends on what you prefer! This session was on the far side of my casual lifestyle sessions with a cozy laid back feel and nothing overly styled.
